Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters that meet provincial requirements can be operated on sidewalks and roadways. They must follow the same rules of the road as pedestrians.

Safety tips for driving electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters

  • Ride only where it's safe, following the same rules and requirements that apply to pedestrians.

  • Do not carry any passengers.

  • Use courtesy and think safety.

  • Drive at the same speed as other pedestrian traffic.

  • Be extra cautious of possible traffic as you approach driveways and lanes.

  • Try to avoid sudden turns.

  • Avoid using your electric wheelchair or mobility scooter if you're taking any medication, drugs or alcohol that may affect your skills or judgement.

Rules for using electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters

ICBC does not register, license or insure electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters are regulated under the Motor Vehicle Act. Please refer to the Motor Vehicle Act or the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for more information.
